Marijn Bax (1981) lives and works in Amsterdam The Netherlands as a photographer and social engaged artist. She is educated in Social Culture Studies (BA) at the HvA, Amsterdam and at the Academy of Art and Graphics and Phtography – Sint Joost, Breda, NL (MA). Her thesis was about intimacy, based on the philosophy of Emanuel Levinas: 'the Other, and Me'. Central to her practice are (inter)human relationships—with places, or determined by places.

Her inspiration stems from her close observation -in the western society- of our constant attempts to gain "control" over ourselves, life, death, others, relationships, and the stories or places we connect with. Marijn plays with this human tendency in her work, stimulating movement, temporality, and deceleration, thereby reflecting on this behavior. Her works present themselves in a seemingly fixed form, but they always represent the beginning of a new story in which you, as the viewer/audience, play a role.

“I'm always searching for the moment where the exclamation mark becomes a question mark again, or the period becomes a comma. I explore the gray area between question and truth, stillness and movement, fact and fiction, creator and audience, and life and death. Where the fixed form is missing: the in-between.”
